The Stubbins Associates Standardizes on Autodesk Revit Building for New Marriott Hotel in Boston

Architects and Designers Use Building Information Modeling to Realize Idea of
                              Sail-Shaped Hotel

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Autodesk, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSK) today announced that The Stubbins Associates, an architectural firm specializing in the hospitality, education, science, civic, healthcare, and commercial industries, has standardized on Autodesk Revit Building software for their latest major project. Revit Building -- Autodesk's solution built specifically for building information modeling (BIM) -- mirrors the real world of architecture by letting architects and designers work on buildings holistically, rather than in terms of separate floor plans, sections and elevations. This enabled the Stubbins team to create a 21-story, 390,000-square-foot, full-service Marriott hotel whose main facade was inspired by the sails of the boats along its Boston waterfront location.

The Stubbins Associates Coordinates Changes and Works 85% Faster With Revit Building

Because of the hotel site's proximity to Boston's Logan airport, the new Marriott's height was dictated by the Federal Aviation Administration. During the design phase the project was subject to multiple public reviews and scrutiny by both the Boston Redevelopment Authority and Massport (the Massachusetts Port Authority), all of which generated countless revisions. Revit Building enabled The Stubbins Associates to quickly and easily implement these revisions and produce accurate documentation.

"The Stubbins Associates are demonstrating their commitment to innovation; remaining competitive and producing quality work by adopting Autodesk Revit Building," said Phillip Bernstein, FAIA, vice president, Autodesk Building Solutions Division. "This is a prime example of the efficiency and options that building information modeling can bring to a project with so many moving parts."

As the project neared completion of the construction document phase, it became apparent that there was insufficient space for air ducts above the fourth floor ballroom ceilings. The solution was to raise the fifth floor and every floor above by one foot and reduce the height of the 21st floor penthouse. This change impacted every elevation and required recalculation and redrawing of all egress stairs. Revit Building's parametric technology, which immediately coordinates changes throughout an entire design, automatically recalculated the stairs so that all drawings and documentation remained coordinated as the floor elevations changed. With Revit Building managing the change, Stubbins indicated they realized an 85% time savings.

"This revision which normally would have taken weeks took only two days. Revit gave us the confidence to make this major change just two weeks before the final construction document set went out the door," said Roy Pedersen, Associate Principal at The Stubbins Associates. "We had peace of mind using Autodesk Revit Building because we were confident that the changes made were coordinated."
