BEA Controls Costs of Facility Building Projects and Reduces Cycle Times with Autodesk Buzzsaw

Dec 09, 2002

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 2002--

Autodesk's Online Project Collaboration Service Provides an

Effective Method for BEA to Manage Multiple Building Projects

Autodesk, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADSK), the world's leading design and digital content creation company, today announced that BEA Systems, Inc., the world's leading application infrastructure software company, has transformed its building project management and facilities management processes with the Autodesk(R) Buzzsaw(TM) collaboration service. For over three years and forty completed projects, BEA has used Buzzsaw to significantly reduce cycle times and control costs associated with its facility-related building projects worldwide. The Buzzsaw service is now fully integrated into BEA's facilities management methodology, enabling project teams to manage all phases of the company's facility building projects--site selection, move-in, building maintenance and improvement--through a single, secure online location.

"Managing projects with Buzzsaw removes the subjectivity and uncertainty about whether or not project teams are communicating clearly and working from the correct information," commented Tom Crowley, director, strategic planning and program management at BEA Systems. "By standardizing our facilities building management processes on Autodesk Buzzsaw, everyone is on the same page."

For BEA, the critical need to improve its building management system became apparent in the late 1990s when rapid growth increased its number of facilities to more than 90 offices around the world. With so many projects in progress, all varying in size and location, BEA found that it needed a way for managers in the San Jose, Calif., headquarters to effectively oversee projects while minimizing travel time and moment-to-moment involvement. They also needed a service that could ensure accountability and version control to make sure all project team members were working off the same set of documents. The Buzzsaw service effectively met these needs, enabling personnel in San Jose to share documents and drawings with building managers and contractors worldwide.

"The tangible process improvements that BEA realized with Buzzsaw--better communication, document control, and resource deployment--have directly translated into faster design and build cycles, and lower costs for travel and delivery," said Chris Bradshaw, vice president, Autodesk Building Collaboration Services. "Because of its flexible infrastructure and easy-to-use features, Buzzsaw works as a natural extension of the project team, resulting in improved building management and maximum cost savings. These are all key areas that building owners and managers must look for when evaluating collaboration services for facility management "

Implementing the Buzzsaw service has helped BEA to reduce the types of glitches that are common to facilities-related projects. In the past, BEA had encountered delays as project teams caught and corrected errors, especially on large, long-term projects. Standardizing on Buzzsaw for building project management enabled BEA to address and correct these issues. Managers are now able to accurately track design document versions, keep all team members up to date by alerting them to significant project events, and eliminate miscommunications by creating audit trails on important documents.
